Jonathan Adachi, M.D., FRCP(C)

Dr. Rich Adachi is a Professor within the Department of Medicine at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. He is a practicing rheumatologist at St. Joseph's Hospital in Hamilton, Canada. Dr. Adachi is a member of the Osteoporosis Society of Canada and the International Osteoporosis Foundation. Dr. Adachi has conducted many clinical trials and has published extensively on a wide variety of therapies for the prevention and treatment of corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis. Dr. Adachi has been involved in the development of outcome instruments such as bone density measurements by dual energy x-ray aborptiometry, by ultrasound, by peripheral quantitative x-ray absorptiometry and more recently by MRI. He has also helped to develop a quality of life instrument for those with osteoporosis as well as an economic instrument. His most recent endeavors are in the field of osteoarthritis.

Robert L. Beeten

Robert L. Beeten from Monument, CO developed and initiated the selection process for the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) volunteer athletic trainer/physician program in 1977. Beeten served as the USOC Medical Director between 1976 and 2000, and acted as the head athletic trainer and medical coordinator during six different Olympics (three Summer Games & three Winter Games) from 1968 to 1984. His last 6 years of employment (1994-2000) were as the Director of Sports Medicine for the United States Olympic Committee.

Some of His special honors include: American Optometric Association, Apollo Award (distinguished service in the field of vision), 1987, and he was elected 10 times as the Big Sky Coach of the Year. The American Dental Association and American Optometry Association have, also honored Beeten, for developing programs in athletic health care.

Daniel D. Gallaher, Ph.D.

Daniel D. Gallaher, Ph.D. is associate professor, Department of Food Science and Nutrition, and Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs, in the College of Human Ecology, University of Minnesota, St. Paul. Dr. Gallaher is a member of numerous professional associations including the American Society for Nutritional Sciences, Institute of Food Technology, Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Nutrition.

Dr. Gallaher's research interests include dietary influences on colon cancer and cholesterol metabolism, dietary fiber, dietary fat, bile acid metabolism, and dietary treatment of diabetes and chronic pancreatitis. Dr. Gallaher is widely published in book chapters, symposia proceedings and peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Nutrition, Lipids and Cereal Chemistry. Dr. Gallaher holds several patents on carotenoid extraction and lowering blood cholesterol levels using water-soluble high viscosity cellulose ethers. Dr. Gallaher received his Ph.D. in Nutrition Science from the University of California, Davis.

Robert L. Hesslink, Jr., Sc.D.

Dr. Hesslink received his Doctorate of Science from the Department of Health Sciences at Boston University in 1987. Dr. Hesslink's dissertation investigated limits to human performance under the guidance of Richard P. Adams, Ph.D., M.D. In addition to working with Drs. William Evans and Walter Frontera at the Tufts University/USDA Center for Human Nutrition on Aging, Robert worked at the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine under the direction of Dr. Michael Sawka. It is this experience in military ergonomics and environmental medicine that provided the impetus for Dr. Hesslink to accept a commission in the U.S. Navy Medical Service Corps in 1986.

Dr. Hesslink was stationed at the Naval Medical Research Institute, Bethesda, MD from 1986 to 1990. During his tenure, Dr. Hesslink published research pertaining to cold water immersion and cold habituation in the Journal of Applied Physiology (JAP) and the American Journal of Physiology (AJP). He also served as a book reviewer for the American College of Sports Medicine as well as manuscript reviewer for both JAP and AJP.

Dr. Hesslink was transferred to the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC), San Diego, CA in 1990 and remained there until his departure from the U.S. Navy in 1993. During his time at NHRC, Dr. Hesslink directed the Cold Weather Medicine program for the U.S. Marine Corps. In collaboration with Dr. David Systrom at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Robert co-authored a paper published in JAP. This research investigated the effects of a high fat or high-carbohydrate diet on muscle bioenergetics as measured using MRS-P 31. Dr. Hesslink continued to publish research in the area of environmental medicine and applied physiology.

Dr. Hesslink has consulted for several large nutrition companies related to human nutrition. He has coordinated over 16 studies over the past eight years with academic institutions. These studies range from animal research to more applied clinical nutrition and exercise.

Dr. Hesslink continues to publish and is active in the American Physiological Society.

William J. Kraemer, Ph.D.

Dr. William J. Kraemer is currently a full professor in the Department of Kinesiology and the Human Performance Laboratory as well as the Director of Research in the Dean's Office of the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. He also holds an appointment as a full professor in the Department of Physiology and Neurobiology along with an appointment as a Professor of Medicine at the UCONN Health Center and Medical School.
Dr. Kraemer is currently a Fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine and has served as a member of the ACSM's Board of Trustees and Administrative Council. He is a past president of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and was honored by the NSCA with both their Outstanding Sports Scientist Award in 1992 and the NSCA's highest award, the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994 for his contributions of bringing science into the field of strength and conditioning. In 2002 he received the first ever Educator of the Year Award from the NSCA for his work over his career in educating people about strength and conditioning. Dr. Kraemer also chairs the oversight committee for NASA looking at strength training in space.
Dr. Kraemer is a member of the American Physiological Society and the Endocrine Society. In addition, Dr. Kraemer serves on numerous scientific journal editorial boards and is the current Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research and Associate Editor of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. He has authored and co-authored over 250 manuscripts in the scientific literature related to sports medicine and sports science. In addition, he has authored or co-authored five books in the areas of sports medicine, strength training and physiology of exercise. He was recently selected by the International Olympic Committee to co-edit the Medical Commission's book on "Strength Training for Sport" which was recently published in 2002.

Lorna R. Vanderhaeghe

Lorna R. Vanderhaeghe is a medical journalist who has been researching and writing on nutritional medicine for over 20 years. Lorna received her B.Sc. degree in Biochemistry from Simon Fraser University located in Canada. She is currently an associate editor for Total Health Magazine in the United States. Lorna is the co-author of the Immune System Cure, published in six countries and translated into French, Dutch, and German, and author of the Canadian bestseller Healthy Immunity: Scientifically Proven Natural Treatments for Conditions from A-Z and The Body Sense Natural Diet. Dr. Thomas Van Dyke, DDS

Professor, Department of Periodontology and Oral Biology, Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine, Program Director, Postdoctoral Periodontology, Director, Clinical Research Center, and Associate Director Boston University School of Medicine General Clinical Research Center.  Dr. Van Dyke devotes approximately 40% of his time to basic science research focusing on resolution of inflammation as a therapeutic target, and an additional 25% to translational research and clinical trials focusing on drug treatment for periodontal disease, local delivery systems, and clinical trials of anti-plaque/anti-gingivitis agents, local anesthetics, regenerative periodontal therapies and early onset periodontitis.  The remainder of his time is devoted to training of clinical fellows and administration.  He received his D.D.S. (1973) from Case Western Reserve University; M.S. (1979) from SUNY at Buffalo in Oral Sciences; Periodontics Certificate (1980) from SUNY at Buffalo, and his Ph.D. (1982) from SUNY at Buffalo in Oral Biology.  Dr. Van Dyke received the Balint Orban Memorial Prize for Research in Periodontology (1981).  He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology (1989), and he received the IADR Award for Basic Research in Periodontology in 2001 and the Norton Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research in 2002.  He serves on the editorial boards of Infection and Immunity (1989-present); Journal of Periodontology (1988-present), Journal of Periodontal Research (1987-present); Journal of Clinical Periodontology (1991-1995), Journal of Public Health Dentistry (1991-1995), Current Opinions in Periodontology (1993), Magazyn Stomatologiczy Dental Magazine (2002-present), and he edited Periodontology 2000 Vol. 6 (1994).   He served as President of the Periodontal Diseases Research Group of the IADR from 1991-1992.  His other IADR/AADR service includes Membership Committee, 1983-1986, Science Information Committee, 1990-1993, and Scientific Awards Committee, 2001-present.  Dr. Van Dyke has also served as President of the International Academy of Periodontology (1997-1999).   Dr. Van Dyke has authored/co-authored 200+ original articles, and numerous abstracts and book chapters.  He is a member of the American/International Association of Dental Research, American Academy of Periodontology, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Association of Immunologists, American Board of Periodontology, American Dental Association, American Society of Microbiology, International Academy of Periodontology, IADR Periodontal Research Group, International Endotoxin and Innate Immunity Society, Northeast Periodontal Society, and Society for Leukocyte Biology.  His research interests are the structural and functional relationship of abnormalities of the inflammatory process with focus on regulation of phagocytic cells, in the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal diseases.  He is best known for his work on the pathways of resolution of inflammation and pathogenesis of periodontal diseases, neutrophil biology, and clinical research.

Dr. Robert Zurier, M.D.

Robert B. Zurier, M.D., has been Professor of Medicine and Chief of Rheumatology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester since 1991. From 1980 to 1991 he was Professor of Medicine and Chief of Rheumatology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. Dr. Zurier graduated from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, and trained in Internal Medicine at Boston City Hospital. He practiced general internal medicine in Holden, MA, for three years before training in clinical and research rheumatology at NYU-Bellevue Medical Center in New York City.
